Rockin' Out with BC’s First School of Rock

British Columbia’s first-ever School of Rock location has taken root right here in Cambie Village, and it’s changing the way Vancouverites of all ages learn music.

Neighbours-turned-business-partners Mike Granek and Al MacInnes admit this isn’t your typical music school. It’s a performance-based music education experience where students become part of a real band, rehearse weekly, and perform live in front of audiences across the city.

“We thought it would be fun to start a music school,” Al explains. “Mike said, ‘I’ve got two tickets to Chicago — let’s go meet the School of Rock team.’ So we did, and we instantly fell in love with the program.”

Mike brought with him a background in events and online education, while Al had spent over a decade touring North America with his rock/pop band, Jazberry Ram.

Unlike traditional music schools in Vancouver, School of Rock offers private music lessons plus weekly group rehearsals. Every student, from kids as young as three to adults — is part of a real band working toward live performances at iconic venues and local events such as Khatsahlano Street Party and Canada Day at Canada Place.
